California Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a type of outpatient treatment for substance use disorders and other mental illnesses. At Restoration Recovery Center, our clients remain at home or in a supportive living environment overnight and attend the program during the day. This page will dive into the key features of a PHP program and what to expect.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

What to Expect from a Partial Hospitalization Program in California
People in a partial hospitalization program can expect to participate in the program approximately 30 hours a week. This typically excludes weekends and patients return to home or to a sober living environment every night to sleep. At Restoration Recovery Center near Sacramento, participants attend the day treatment program Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Restoration Recovery Center requires PHP participants to commit to a minimum of 30 days in the program. Some patients at Restoration stay up to 90 days in the program before continuing with a less-intensive outpatient program or deciding to transition to a more-intensive residential program.
PHP vs IOP: What's the Difference?
Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are both forms of outpatient substance use disorder treatment. In both IOP and PHP addiction treatment, patients continue to live at home and attend the program during the day throughout the week.
The two programs differ in their intensity and time commitment. Partial hospitalization programs are the most time-intensive and structured type of outpatient treatment for substance use disorders. Intensive outpatient programs are considered “less intensive” than partial hospitalization treatment. PHPs also offer more hours of treatment services compared to IOPs. In fact, PHPs are typically twice as many hours (30 hours a week) compared to IOPs (9-12 hours per week).
Who Should Consider a Partial Hospitalization Program?
Partial hospitalization programs are considered the most intensive type of outpatient treatment. PHPs can be a good option as a step-down from inpatient detox and/or as a first step before moving to less intensive outpatient services.
It may be the right addiction treatment if you:
- Have a stable living situation.
- Have a healthy social support system.
- Have reliable transportation.
- Do not require overnight care.
